A minimum of 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
