Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
